It’s another kind of high,
When you turn a blind eye,
To that which once chained you,
Had you begging for just a touch, just a hint;
Had you loitering about like a lout,
Fighting for it in seedy streets,
Shaking hands with shady peeps,
All for a miniscule pinch.
===
It’s another kind of high,
When you overcome those bald-faced lies,
You told your time-wizened folks,
Who caught you sneaking out at dinner time,
To covertly sell their only car,
Or bike, or your well-earned guitar.
You gave up all that you loved, but you guessed not as much,
As that chemical mirage.
===
Oh, it’s another kind of high,
When you show that ex who she had effaced,
From her life when she debased,
You; told you ,’you’re wasted, it’s over!’,
Left you bleeding from your eyes for another loser,
Had you reaching for that syringe once again,
Just to overcome a bloody breakup hangover.
===
Its another kind of high,
When you put those nights behind,
When chained to a rehab bed,
You bleakly realized,
‘No one’s coming for you, you stupid shit!’
Staring at those cold, blank walls, you’d ask yourself,
‘Could death be better than this?’
===
It’s another kind of high,
When you see your former self in someone else,
And though you empathize with the poor schmuck,
You still thank your luck,
That you’re over it, you’re still alive,
You fought it off and you’ll do alright.
Yes, it’s another kind of high…
You’re high on life!

How do you manage to write so well? As I said previously, I’m not a poetry person but I can feel some buzz in these words. BTW what’s the inspiration behind this post?

Thanks a lot. Maybe you’ve developed a liking for poetry? Who knows? Maybe we shall see some coming from you two.
As for the inspiration, I have some in my extended family who had to deal with drugs and rehab. But I didn’t understand just how bad addiction is until I worked on it a few moths back, for a research project I was doing for someone. The addiction problem runs far deeper than most of us understand. So that’s why the poem

Frankly, it’s beyond me. The poetry. The one that I loved was…. The woods are dark and deep…. Robert frost. I’m sure you would have read. It’s a classic!
I’m sure addiction is bad. Modern life pressures and expectations…..

My father always told me that there’s always a kind of poetry for a kind of people. Explore. Maybe you’ll find it. Yes I’ve read Frost’s monumental piece. My father quotes from it every now and then.
Yes addiction is bad, not just for the addict, but their families too. It just ruins everything in that family. That’s been my personal experience. I just hope that with all this awareness and drives about it, fewer people fall prey to it.

I also think so…as you know already from my some poems…especially recent ones…

I’m sure with his experience it will be accurate. I haven’t explored much but surely I liked the classic English poetry. I also enjoyed limericks, at certain point of time. That too was from the Victorian era. ☺
As for addiction I feel the modern day pressure and corrupt beliefs are responsible.

Classic English poetry? Then who was your favourite? Chaucer, Wordsworth, Byron? Most people like limericks because of their simplicity but creating them is an art form. That means that you have knowledge of poetry and you’re just waiting to read the right kind. 😊
With addiction, I feel its more a lifestyle problem than one caused by pressure. Most people start with it young when they are devoid of any pressures. What plays on them more is their peer group and how these days addiction and getting a high has become ‘cool’… Its a very disturbing trend among the young because not only does it get you hooked to it fast, it also ruins the rest of your life.

Frankly I don’t know many names now. I read them in old poetry book which dates to end of 1800’s. It was published in England. Limerick? I really enjoyed them. I guess British really know this art. Not sure if it’s popular now.

Then you already know which form of poetry you like. 😊 My father was right after all 😀 limericks are full of witty humor. Guess you like that kind of poetry where satire and wit can fit in a humorous context.

I guess you said it well. Most poetry is composed during certain state of emotion. Often sadness…. Sometimes deep experiences. That’s not what I enjoy. There’s so much pressure around, already! May be that’s one reason for not enjoying or understanding poetry. Just a guess!

Poetry has a very bad image with most people… That it’s only meant for losers, lovers or lost souls. But its not like that at all. There’s all kinds of it, just like there’s all kinds of stories to appeal to everyone’s tastes. I’m sure in time you’ll find something that you love reading too 😊

I wouldn’t say its a bad image. I’m sorry if my words indirectly meant that way. I’m sure there are all kinds. May be I have only come across certain types.

No no i didn’t mean you… By no means did I mean that. I’m saying in general terms. My own husband used to think poetry is all Bakwaas, so…. 😑 But now he tolerates it much better, especially if it’s funny or about him 😂
