Sketch of a girl’s head in pencil and charcoal
You were standing here
At this same spot, where
You held my hand last year.
How clear you were,
When you said
Those three words,
Convinced that nothing
Could shake us, break us.
But death did.
…
Now wisps of air
They’ve become,
Those three words,
And you, you’ve turned
Your back to ‘us’.
You let go,
While I can’t leave.
You lay in peace,
While I turn to pieces.
…
And here I stand
Still rooted to this spot,
My head still stuck,
In the ‘us’ of the past.
While you, dead, walk far
Away, into eternal light.
Yet funny how it’s me,
That’s stuck in the dark.

Very well written, Pradita. Love the last line. It is true that the ones left behind are in the dark.

I know. The heart aches for those who are left behind to wish that they had gone into the light too. How sad it is for them. I hope you haven’t faced any such loss.

Powerful…………after they leave, there is a void left behind, they sure are no more alive to feel that but we through memories can never escape them. We can’t suddenly just stop knowing them and we certainly can’t bring them back………we are just stuck, forever. Beautifully expressed and amazing sketch! 🙂

You’ve expressed that emptiness so well yourself. Moving forward and leaving it behind must be so hard for them. There’s always this sense of betraying their memory too that doesn’t let them forget them. So much more agonizing than death itself. Thank you so much for your encouraging words Pushkar 😊😊

It is a well written poignant poem, Pradita. When someone leaves loved ones behind they also leave behind lot of memories.. actually, they become immortal through those memories. You’re truly gifted writer, there is no doubt about it! I had written a poem on same thoughts long back named ‘Separation’.. would share on my blog. Please read and let me know.
