A ball of yarn
Maybe but only
A ball of yarn to you.
That unassuming orb of
Dyed sheep hair
Represents possibilities to others.
Of being a warm reminder
Of mothers arms to a mewling babe.
Of being a comforting presence
Around a lovesick lover’s neck.
Of being a quirky bric-a-brac
In a faraway best friend’s life.
Or, in a child’s hands,
Of being an object of undiluted delight.
Of being a life-saver
To a homeless man
Shivering in the cold street.
Of being the bread and butter
To an artisan’s impoverished family.
‘Tis but one ball of yarn
Holding a world of possibilities.
