The Time Bottler

She bottles up time
In an old Mason jar.
Gathering old watches,
Some intact,
Some that have stopped,
Some that will.

You can tell
By their wretched hands.
They muster the strength
For one last lap
Across the face of time.
But failed by meager machinery,
Only manage a twitch,
Like the legs of an ant
Crushed under a boot –
Stuck somewhere
Between hope and despair.

‘Your brother doesn’t have time, little girl’,
So the doctor had said.
‘Failed by his meager machinery’,
He had explained.
So she bottles up time
In an old Mason jar –
Stuck somewhere
Between hope and despair.
